Apple Announces A New iPad: The Revolution Is The Price

359 € for wifi, 489 € for 4G

As expected, Apple took advantage of its event dedicated to education to unveil a new iPad that, like the model of last year, seeks to convince by its price and not by its technical sheet.

In a keynote dedicated to education – an event that had not happened since 2012 – Apple unveiled a new iPad. Designed to take over from the 2017 iPad, this new model does not really stand out by its technical characteristics, but by its price. A micro-revolution for the apple firm.

The “new iPad”, since it’s his name, is based on last year’s tablet, “the most popular ever released” according to Apple. So we find a modest but correct technical sheet: 9.7 inches (24.6 cm) screen, Apple A10 chip (the same as in the iPhone 7), TouchID fingerprint sensor, 8 Mpx main photo sensor (probably the same as on the iPad 2017), GPS chip, 4G optional and the promise of 10 hours of autonomy. Nothing really revolutionary so: Apple is changing his touchpad nicely, without upheavals. At the same time, we do not see why the company would do too much harm, it is No. 1 in the sector despite its pace of quiet innovation.

The stylus, but not the smart keyboard

One of the features that Apple puts forward to justify the “student” positioning of its tablet is the support of the Apple Pencil (sold separately at a price of € 99). The new device indeed supports the stylus and can detect as many levels of pressure and angles as the iPad Pro. This should help students and teachers to annotate documents and other digitized homework more easily. The company also took the opportunity to announce that it was partnering with some manufacturers to offer other stylets. Logitech will notably market a stylus cut for the iPad, priced at 49 €

More surprising on the other hand, the absence of the “smart connector” (which allows to add a keyboard to iPad Pro 12.9 and 10.5 inches) seems to contradict a little “productive” will of this machine. A very strange choice to try to seduce a part of the population who spend most of his days taking notes. Certainly, Bluetooth keyboards will be available, but it is curious to see that Apple does not democratize its technologies on its new devices.

Hunting for the general public

However, the company did not just reveal a new machine: it also made a small point on its software offering, promising updates of all its suite iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote etc.), as well as as support for different sessions on the tablets. This last feature is not really new, but it is reserved for schools. Finally, the accounts “Education” will have the right to 200 GB of free storage on iCloud.

All this nice package will be sold at 359 € for the Wifi model and 489 € for the 4G version. This iPad is the cheapest ever sold by Apple. A tactic not so usual at Apple, but which proved successful last year with the carton of the iPad 2017. The firm knows that the No. 2 tablet market is none other than Amazon, with its ridiculously cheap tablets. Rather than offer the latest fashionable technologies (Face ID, side-by-side screen, etc.) to seduce “power users” who have anyway rarely adhered to the fashion of the tablet, Apple will look for students and the very large public concerned about its expenses. One way like another to impose its ecosystem.
