Duel Of Smartphones – Honor 10 vs Asus Zenfone 5

The Asus Zenfone 5 and Honor 10 share the same ambition: to offer an experience close to that of the high-end, without asking for an organ in exchange. A commendable will in a market that sees prices soar. For less than 400 €, these two smartphones offer a nice performance, but who is the best?

ERGONOMICS AND DESIGN: ASUS ZENFONE 5

Asus and Honor both succumbed to the temptation of the notch screen. Whether it likes it or not, the latter allows to fit the communication speaker and the front photo module in a good place, while maximizing the space occupied by the screen. The Zenfone 5 from Asus still retains a slight advantage in this area, with an occupancy rate of about 84%, against 80% for the Honor 10, a little behind because he made the choice to place the fingerprint reader on the front, in a strip below the screen. At Asus, this device is positioned on the back.

In terms of finishes, the Chinese model (Honor) and the Taiwanese (Asus) are neutralized. Both offer a performance worthy of a high-end smartphone. The same criticism can be made to both smartphones, namely the lack of waterproofing certification. Asus grabs a few points in this round by offering a microSD port in addition to two nano SIM ports. The Honor 10 has two SIM slots, but no possibility to expand the internal memory. This small difference allows the Zenfone 5 to take the advantage.

SCREEN: EQUALITY

Neither Asus nor Honor choose the Oled for the screen of their smartphones. LCD IPS for everyone, so. With contrast ratios of 1,300: 1 and 1,500: 1, the Honor 10 and Asus Zenfone 5 do not really separate. With a brightness that can climb slightly higher (566 cd / m² against 457), the terminal of Asus is more to his advantage against the sun. The Honor 10 stands out in the dark, with a lower minimum brightness (2.3 cd / m² against 5). These two are really good for each other.

Honor marks a point in terms of colorimetry. The screen of the Honor 10 displays an excellent delta E at 1.1, against 2.6 for the Zenfone 5. Nothing too catastrophic for the latter, quite the contrary. The Honor 10 has a resolution slightly higher than its competitor (432 ppp against 402) – not enough to dig any gap as the difference is little noticeable. Overall, the Honor 10 and Zenfone 5 stand in a handkerchief in this set, with two very good IPS screens.

PERFORMANCES: HONOR 10

Honor finally manages to take the lead in this duel. It must be said that the Chinese manufacturer has equipped his smartphone chip Kirin 970, found in high-end terminals at Huawei. Asus was satisfied with a Snapdragon 636, balanced but slightly more modest. If you are a user who does not get the most out of your smartphone, you will not notice any difference. On the other hand, if you are one of those who push their mobile in its entrenchments, the Honor 10 is more solid.

A superiority that is confirmed elsewhere for the video game. The graphics chip used at Honor delivers an excellent gaming experience. The demanding 3D titles will be at their best. Zenfone 5 remains good, but a notch below in this area.

AUDIO: ASUS ZENFONE 5

The Zenfone 5 from Asus offers a very good headphone output. Power, correct accuracy, wide dynamic range and good stereo: it’s all good. The Honor 10 is a little worse than its competitor with a level of output a little hair that will limit its access to gourmet helmets.

The Zenfone 5 benefits from two speakers, when the Honor 10 offers only one. Result, the stereo is completely absent from the latter and the first is more powerful. Admittedly, we can blame the Asus for its lack of precision at full volume.

PHOTO: HONOR 10

There was a time when only high-end smartphones managed to achieve good results in photography. If the most posh terminals retain some for some, the Honor 10 and Asus Zenfone 5 are proof that it is possible to do well at less than 400 €. The two smartphones promise mountain and wonders thanks to the AI, right now put in all the sauces by the manufacturers to explain that they have improved the recognition of scenes – available to everyone for a long time.

When the light is lenient, both devices are doing well. Honor and Asus show slightly different approaches in image processing. With the Honor 10, the atmosphere is a little forced colors and good exposure. For Zenfone 5, the image is less well exposed, but retains a good level of detail and more natural.

In low light, the Honor 10 clearly takes the advantage. The management of the electronic noise is very good and is done without resorting to smoothing; the exposure is good. Admittedly, we detect an accentuation of the contrasts, but the result is satisfactory. At Asus, this is not the disaster, but we are much more embarrassed by the electronic noise. The small details are lost and the whole is more rough.

For the second photo module, Honor and Asus chose different approaches. On the Chinese terminal, it is the inevitable monochrome sensor that is part of; unfortunately, it is not as good as what is found on a Huawei P20, for example. On the Taiwanese mobile side, it is a very wide-angle module that is proposed. It is then necessary to compose with a clear deformation in barrel, common on the focal lengths so short, but the second module of the Zenfone 5 a good level of detail in the set. If a monochrome sensor knows how to touch the heart of artists who love black and white, the wide-angle is interesting for photos of landscapes or buildings, for example.

Self-portraits will be well served by both Zenfone 5 and Honor 10. The latter, however, offers better exhibition management than the first.

UTONOMY: HONOR 10

If the advantage of the Honor 10 is tenuous in the photo, it is not at all on the autonomy. The Chinese smartphone signs an excellent performance, where the Zenfone 5 disappoints. The difference is here marked: an average user can enjoy his Zenfone 5 for a little over a day, against two days for the Honor 10. The more relentless users will need to recharge the smartphone of Asus before the end of the day, when Honor’s can cash in a big day without trembling.

VERDICT: HONOR 10

These two smartphones are elbow-to-elbow in many ways. The Honor 10 and Asus Zenfone 5 are both good value for money. However, the clear advantage of autonomy shown by the Honor 10 makes it more interesting in the end. Add to this better performance for low light photography, as well as in game and advanced use. However, it will be necessary to compose without memory extension possible, which offers on the other hand the Asus Zenfone 5, also better in audio.
